What is Louise McKinney scholarship?
The Louise McKinney Post-secondary Scholarship was established to honor Louise McKinney. It recognizes students’ academic achievements and encourages them to continue in their undergraduate or graduate programs of study.
The Louise McKinney Post-secondary Scholarships are divided into two categories, as explained on this page.
1. Louise McKinney Post-secondary Scholarship
- Scholarship Value: $2,500
- No. of Scholarships: Each year, up to 1,450 scholarships are given out.
Criteria for eligibility
The applicants must:
- Applicants must be Canadian citizens, Permanent Residents, or Protected Persons (visa students are not eligible). A minimum GPA of 3.2 is required for the scholarship. The applicant must have a GPA of at least 3.2 from September to April of the previous academic year.
- Be a resident of Alberta. To be considered an Alberta resident, one of the following conditions must be met:
- To begin post-secondary studies, one parent or legal guardian must have lived in Canada as a permanent resident for at least 12 months in a row. Alternatively, if the student last lived in Alberta for 12 months prior to commencing college or university.
- Prior to attending college or university, the student’s spouse or partner lived in Alberta as a permanent resident for a full year.
- To be eligible, students must be full-time in their second or subsequent year of an undergraduate or professional degree at a publicly financed post-secondary school in Alberta, and have satisfactory academic standing as determined by the college or university.

Students who have been nominated for a Jason Lang Scholarship during the same school year are not eligible for the Louise McKinney Scholarship.

The Selection Process
Selection is determined by how well you performed in school. Each school can only get a set number of scholarships, and application dates vary by school.

2. Louise McKinney Post-secondary Scholarship – Study outside Alberta

Requirements for Louise McKinney Post-secondary Scholarship
To be eligible for this program, you must be a Canadian citizen, permanent resident, or protected person (visa students are not eligible) and reside in Alberta.
To be considered an Alberta resident, one of the following conditions must be met:
- At least one parent or legal guardian has lived in Canada for at least 12 months before the student begins post-secondary studies in Alberta.
- Alberta is the last place the student lived for 12 months before starting post-secondary school. The student’s partner or spouse resides in Alberta.
- Continue to study full-time at a post-secondary school outside of Alberta in their second or later year of an undergraduate or professional degree.
- Studied full-time at a post-secondary school outside Alberta during the previous school year.
- The study program is not available in Alberta.
- The class rank is in the top 2% of all students who studied the same program the previous year.

Students are not eligible for the Louise McKinney Scholarship if they:
- in a graduate program,
- enrolled part-time,
- an apprentice, or
- Currently upgrading.
How to Apply: Application Process
Students studying outside of Alberta must provide an academic transcript, a letter from the registrar stating their class status in the top 2% of their previous year of study, and a completed application form by the applicant.
Your transcript must have your school’s or institution’s official signature or seal. This indicates that the material comes from your school or institution.
Copies that have been copied or faxed are not allowed. Students at a college or university must contact their colleges to obtain official transcripts.
The scholarship requires a minimum GPA of 3.2. The applicant must have a GPA of at least 3.2 from September to April of the previous academic year.
Deadline
Apply for this scholarship between August 1 and January 15.
