The grants are for doctoral degrees (or a combined MA/PhD or MD/PhD).
Host institutions include Canadian universities with Vanier CGS allotments. Without exception, the Vanier CGS is only valid at the qualifying Canadian institution that submitted the nomination.

It should be noted that funding is only available for the PhD portion of a dual degree.

- Have completed no more than 20 months of doctorate studies as of 1 May 2024. • Have finished no more than 32 months of full-time study in their doctoral program by 1 May 2024 if enrolled in a dual graduate research program, such as MD/PhD, MA/PhD, or DVM/PhD. Applicants that fall into this group have access to the 32-month window, whether or not they were previously enrolled in a Master’s program.

- You have received a first-class average, as assessed by your institution, in each of the last two years of full-time study or equivalent. Candidates should contact the university for their definition of a first-class average. Additionally, they must not hold or have held a doctoral-level scholarship or fellowship from CIHR, NSERC, or SSHRC to pursue a PhD degree.

Application Instructions:
Applications are currently closed.
Candidates must be nominated by a Canadian institution with a quota for which they wish to study. Applicants cannot apply directly to the Vanier CGS program.
Applications start in one of two ways. Either the student notifies the faculty of graduate studies at the selected university of their intention to apply to the Vanier CGS program, or the institution initiates the nomination procedure by contacting the prospective applicant.
The student prepares the application, which is then sent to the nominating institution by their internal deadline via the ResearchNet application system.
The nominating institution then transmits the suggested nominations to the Vanier-Banting Secretariat (the Secretariat) by November 1, 2024.
