The Schulich Leader Scholarships program acknowledges students from throughout Canada who excel in academics, leadership, charisma, and originality and want to pursue an undergraduate degree in STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering, Mathematics) on either of UBC’s campuses.
The Schulich Leader Scholarship was established by Canadian businessman and philanthropist Seymour Schulich and is handled by the UJA Federation of Greater Toronto.
Mr. Schulich is a well-known entrepreneur and philanthropist who is passionate about encouraging young people to pursue careers in science and technology.
Eligibility
To be eligible, you need to:
- Be a Canadian citizen or permanent resident who will graduate from a Canadian high school, secondary school, or CEGEP during the academic year 2024-2025.
- Get nominated by your high school, secondary school, or CEGEP.

Meets the following criteria:
- Demonstrates academic excellence, leadership, charm, and creativity.
- Be entrepreneurial-minded and intend to work in one or more of the following focus areas: technology, engineering, entrepreneurship and business enterprise, or applied scientific research.
- Not be pursuing a career as a practicing physician and/or medical researcher (e.g., doctor, dentist, nurse, psychologist, pharmacist, optometrist), and do not aim to become a professor and perform theoretical research.
- Avoid emphasizing activism (environmental, political, or sociological).
- Students with financial needs will receive special consideration.
The Schulich Leader Scholarship: Eligible Degree Programs
To be eligible, you must apply to one of the following STEM faculties:
UBC’s Okanagan campus
- Faculty of Applied Science (includes Engineering)
- Faculty of Science
- UBC’s Vancouver campus
- Faculty of Applied Science (includes Engineering)
- Faculty of Science

Award value
The Schulich Leader Scholarships in Engineering are valued at $120,000. If all renewal criteria are met, recipients will earn $30,000 per year for the next four years.
Schulich Leader Scholarships in STEM faculties other than Engineering are worth $100,000. If all renewal criteria are completed, recipients will receive $25,000 per year for the next four years.
How can you apply for the Schulich Leader Scholarship?
Students in their final year of high school, secondary school, or CEGEP can be nominated as Schulich Leaders by their respective schools.
High schools may nominate one student every year, whereas CEGEPs can nominate up to four pupils.

When is the deadline?
In Canada, the Schulich Leaders nomination cycle for 2024/25 finishes on January 30, 2024.
Nominees must complete a separate online Schulich Leader application by February 20, 2024. Representatives from the Schulich Leader Scholarships office will send an email with a link to this application. All letters of reference must be completed and received by the same deadline.
When will the winners be announced?
The Schulich Leader Scholarship awardees will be notified on or around June 15, 2024.
