Undergraduate grants for students studying STEM fields are offered via the Schulich Scholarship, an Israeli and Canadian organization.
The program was started in 2011 to develop STEM leaders to boost the economic competitiveness of Canada and Israel.
It is co-administered by the UJA Federation of Greater Toronto and was made possible by a $100 million donation from Canadian businessman and philanthropist Seymour Schulich.
977 high schools and CÉGEPs from all around Canada nominated someone to compete in the annual award competition in the program’s first year.
Out of the 1,250 candidates that submitted nominations in 2015, fifty were chosen by one of the twenty participating colleges to receive the award.
Every secondary school in Canada is allowed to submit one contender per year for the prize; however, CÉGEPs in Québec are allowed to submit up to four nominees.
Nominees must possess an entrepreneurial mindset and fulfill two of the following three requirements in order to be considered for the scholarship: they must also be financially needy or demonstrate exceptional community, business, or entrepreneurial leadership.

Twenty participating universities select two students to receive the Schulich Leader Scholarships from among the pool of nominees who applied to their school; the first student, who plans to pursue undergraduate studies in engineering, is awarded a $100,000 CAD scholarship, while the second student, who plans to pursue undergraduate studies in one of the other three STEM disciplines, is awarded a $80,000 CAD scholarship.
The five university partners with the most nominee applications by the deadline receive an additional eight scholarships to offer: four for engineering and four for science and mathematics.
